Catastrophic Injuries
In some car accidents, victims are able to walk away from the incident with only minor cuts or bruises. Sometimes, though, the resulting injuries can be catastrophic. In far too many cases, these injuries can be permanent and cause a lot of pain for the victim throughout their lifetime. Victims may need to stay in a hospital for a long time and may need to stay in long-term care facility if they are able to leave the hospital, and as a result, their quality of life may be severely affected.
Catastrophic injuries can include the following:
- Spinal cord injuries: These are injuries that involve the vertebrae. Sometimes the victim will lose the use of both their arms and legs (quadriplegia), other times they may lose the use of the legs, but not their arms (paraplegia). Sometimes the paralysis can be partial – other times it can be complete. The level of pain can differ depending on the injury. Often, loss of mobility is a consequence.
- Amputation: Amputation means that an arm or a leg or other body part (like a finger or toe) has to be cut off – in part or in whole.
- Burns: Burn pain can be quite severe and very long lasting. Often times, the patient will need multiple surgeries. On top of that, since burns can cause disfigurement and scarring, the pain can have a strong emotional component as well as a physical one. There’s also a risk of infection with burn injuries.
- Brain injury: Injuries to the brain can cause loss of motor function, speech, memory loss, a change in personality, and more. Brain injuries often occur in vehicle accidents because the driver or passenger hits his/her head on the steering wheel, windshield, or dashboard.
Other catastrophic injuries can include neck and back injuries, broken bones, and damage to internal organs like the lungs, kidney, spleen, and liver.
