McDonald’s voluntarily recalled Hello Kitty lollipop whistles after finding out that small components of the toy might detach, posing choking hazards to children, Bloomberg reported on November 11.
The recall involved around 2.3 million China-made toys, which come free with every Happy Meal and Mighty Kids Meal. Consumers are asked to return the product for a free replacement toy and a choice of either a yogurt tube or a bag of sliced apples.
The company already received two reports of children who coughed out pieces of the toy after sucking it, one of whom required medical attention.
In an online statement, the fast-food giant said it already retrieved 70%, or 1.6 million, of the defective whistles.
