Joe has been practicing injury law for over 31 years in the Hampton Roads, Virginia area. He is admitted to practice law in both Virginia and North Carolina. He has also successfully represented injured victims on a ‘pro hac vice’ basis in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Maryland, and Florida. Joe earned his B.A. at Emory University in Atlanta, GA, in 1984. He is a graduate of the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at William & Mary, where he received his Juris Doctor degree in 1987. Joe was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., but he has spent most of his life in the Hampton Roads area, having grown up in the Churchland area of Portsmouth and the Western Branch area of Chesapeake. He graduated from Western Branch High School in 1980. He currently resides in Norfolk, VA with his wife, two daughters and their Australian Shepard, ‘Luna’ Outside of law practice, Joe enjoys engaging in religious studies, playing guitar, writing and recording music in his music studio, mountain biking, snow skiing, and just spending time with his family at home. Joe says his favorite part of practicing law is, “when it is crystal clear that the client you are helping is in dire need of your services. You realize that if the two of you had not been brought together, this person would likely be making choices that would have severe adverse consequences for him or her. It feels really good when you can present an injured client with advice and a plan of action that puts him or her on the right path to a successful future, a new start, and financial security. Just knowing that the client is sleeping better at night—with fewer clouds of worry and doubt that were there before you came along— that helps me sleep better as well.”

Beth Powers

Workers Compensation Paralegal
Beth Powers

Beth has been working in the legal field for 21 years in the Hampton Roads area.  Beth was very active in the Virginia Peninsula Paralegal Association for much of that time, where she served as President for several years. Beth enjoys keeping current with continuing legal education in many areas of law.  In the past she has been active in the National Association of Legal Assistants as well as the Virginia Trial lawyers Association.  She grew up in the Newport News area where her family operated roller-skating rinks and graduated high school in Gloucester, VA. Beth served as a Court-Appointed Special Advocate for Children in the Newport News Juvenile & Domestic Relations District Court which is a program she holds near and dear to her heart.  Beth’s greatest joy in life is being a mother and grandmother. Her interests outside of work include art/painting, the beach, fishing, watching the Dallas Cowboys and spending as much time with her family as possible. She feels compassion for our clients who are going through a hard time in their lives. She wishes to make the process of the resolution of each client’s claim proceed with as little stress on the client as possible. Beth feels this gives her purpose in her work and drives her to help us fight for our clients every day.

Andrew Hartzler

Administrative Assistant

Andrew grew up in Newport News, Virginia. He has lived his entire life in different parts of Virginia. He loves the salt water as well as the Blue Ridge Mountains. Andrew graduated from Christopher Newport University with a B.A. and he has furthered his education with multiple conferences, on the job trainings, and other professional development resources. Andrew has over 10 years experience talking to clients, customers, and the general public over the phone. He worked in technical support for several years, and then changed career fields and became interested in claims. After two years of handling logistics claims for UPS (tracing lost packages), Andrew had the opportunity to work as a personal injury adjuster for a major auto insurance company. He specialized in Virginia personal injury and was also licensed to adjust North Carolina claims. Andrew knows how insurance companies “work” and how to deal with them. Joe has even jokingly referred to Andrew as an “insurance geek” which Andrew does not dispute. Andrew loves his Hampton Roads community and is very grateful to be making a positive change in the lives of people who are injured and need help. In his spare time, Andrew has many hobbies and interests including kayaking, chess, reading, video games, and cooking. Andrew and his wife live in Virginia Beach and currently have two amazing cats Ragnar and Valentine.

She has a love for the beach and enjoys sharing that with her son and twin daughters. Kristina is super excited to be a part of the amazing team at Joe Miller Law.
